New Horizons Home School Academy℠ was founded in 1995 by Myrna Boyer, a professional businesswoman and mother of four. Myrna gradually made the transition from successful consultant to home schooling parent when her 3 youngest children reached school age. Although it was not initially her intention to establish an umbrella home school, over the course of the first few months of home schooling her own children, NHHS Academy℠ was created in response to the demand by other parents who eagerly sought an alternative to the public school system for their own children.

Many of these parents had tried the private educational sector as well, only to meet with a similar fate and encounter problems of the same ilk as that which they had experienced before with the public schools. To them, it seemed that more and more the private school system was taking on the face of the public system of education. For these parents, home schooling was a viable alternative. It fit with their need to bring education back to its basic, most fundamental roots. Home schooling offered what most public and private schools could no longer assure a parent of: a safe and sane environment where each individual student can excel academically. And it is that spirit with which NHHS Academy℠ took shape.
